Miitomo: Thoughts on it
“Miyatomo”
Nintendo’s
new game on smart phone Miitomo is a few things; charming, quirky, creepy, and
weird. You can hook up your Mii from your Wii U or 3DS or make your own for
this title. The biggest thing about this is the customization.
It’s
almost exactly like Tomadachi Life a 3DS sim game with Mii’s. I have never
played Tomadachi Life, but I know enough about it, that Miitomo is very
similar. Like with all Mii stuff, you have to put a nickname for your Mii.
Unlike some of other Nintendo’s product, it doesn’t have a word sensor. So I
can easily put in profanity despite the purpose of Miitomo to be a social media
for Nintendo but in a game setting. Nintendo is generally very good about
sticking to their family friendly audience that it’s a bit bizarre that this is
an exploit in the product.
Now,
Nintendo isn’t too known for voice overs in their games. One it costs too much
after a while, and two; never forget Star Fox Adventures. However, Miitomo has
voice overs and it comes across very creepy. You can control the speech pattern
by the pitch, speed, accent, depth and energy. It comes across very robotic and
creepy. Almost a Siri you can control and put the words in her mouth, which
isn’t pleasant since I toyed around with what I can do. It mispronounces a lot
of the words I put in making it sound very weird and there’s no way to fix the
pronunciation except adding a syllable of that word to make it sound the way
it’s supposed to. Which it makes it look like I can’t spell.
Miitomo
is very bizarre in a Japanese anime kind of way. I really didn’t see much to do
besides dressing my Mii who sounded very flamboyant which no matter what I
tried, it just sounded creepy. Maybe that’s the point to make it zany and fun,
but I just found it very unnerving and Nintendo very much out of their normal
zone.
