Unsung Heroes: Piccolo

Who is your favorite Dragon Ball Z character? Most people answers are Goku, Vegeta, Gohan and maybe Future Trunks. All of those characters are great, but there’s one I feel that is generally forgotten about how much he contributes in Dragon Ball Z. His name is Piccolo.

Piccolo is a Namekian, an alien from the planet Namek. Piccolo, or rather Piccolo Jr. was born as the successor of Demon King Piccolo as an incarnation of the Demon King to exact his revenge on Goku due to being defeated and murdered by Goku. Piccolo Jr. doesn’t meet up with Goku until about three years after the battle where Goku had trained with Kami, Piccolo’s good half. Piccolo is a hero in Dragon Ball Z, but is often forgotten that he started off as a villain.

Of course, you probably know the story, Piccolo Jr. is defeated by Goku at the Grand Martial Arts Tournament, and is spared by Goku. They later team up in the beginning of Dragon Ball Z to defeat Raditz resulting in Goku’s death. Piccolo takes Goku’s son Gohan and trains him. Now here’s where Piccolo is underrated for, he trains Gohan, who at the point of the Cell Saga is stronger than Goku himself, and Goku barely did actual training with Gohan, it was all Piccolo. Piccolo is more of a father figure than Goku ever was, Goku is often gone training, missing in space, or just straight up dead. Goku is gone most of Gohan’s life, and Piccolo, the man who originally hated Goku, who later becomes his friend, is the one who raised Gohan. That’s pretty ironic since Piccolo was an antagonist for a good while, despite that Goku has always been a protagonist and never a villain. Think about that for a bit.

Piccolo also trains Goten, the second son of Goku, and Trunks, the son of Vegeta. Goten and Trunks become on par in power with Super Buu when they fuse to become the mighty Gotenks. However, Gotenks was still a kid, and quite a mischievous one, so he often saw fighting Buu as a game rather than a stake for the Earth’s safety. Point is, Piccolo has trained some of the strongest fighters, and he isn’t even their parent!

Piccolo may not be the most badass character in Dragon Ball Z, he isn’t even the strongest character, however he has helped forged some of the best fighters in the series. Also it helps that he is voiced by Christopher Sabat who also voices Vegeta and a lot of other characters from Dragon Ball Z and other anime. Piccolo might be one of the more underrated characters in the series because people tend to only see power levels, and to quote Dragon Ball Z abridged; power levels are bull$***.
